We have received a letter from Transport Minister Knoll in response to our call for further State government funding.
Key points:
The Ministers refers to the Planning and Development Fund as a source of money to construct shared use paths.
The Department is:
- currently building the Gawler Greenway, between Islington to Mawson Lakes. (The cost of this is $3m, compared with $4.5m historically provided under the State Bike Fund to subsidize local government initiatives.)
- “negotiating” with the City of Unley about Mike Turtur Bikeway between Goodwood Road and King William Road.
- “continuing to roll-out the provision of bike parking at targeted public transport stations by providing secure bike cages and is also partnering with local government to provide bicycle parking rails at stops and stations.”
- “happy to discuss” further development of Jack Bobridge Track with Barossa Council.
Also, the Department
- “will liaise” with the City of Adelaide to provide a link between the Park Lands Trail and the Royal Adelaide Hospital using rail land, and
- would be “pleased to liaise” with Adelaide Hills Council to “improve conditions” (i.e. provide a bike track) between Stirling and Crafers.
Other points:
- There is no room for protected bike lanes to enable safe cycling on Sudholz Road to the Paradise bus interchange.
- The Great Southern Railway still at “early planning stages”.
- The City of Onkaparinga should apply to the Planning and Development fund for money to help pay for improved cycling between Willunga and the coast.
